If you take your laptop to a different TV you will have to do it all again so be warned. On my Aug 2011 MacbookPro I had to do ALL of the above. You may have to do some or all of the above to get sound out of your TV from your computer using the DisplayPort to HDMI cable. You will now have sound coming out of your TV from your computer ? If you still cannot hear sound, log out of your account and then log back in. Make sure that sound output is selected and that you can now see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list of devices. If you CANNOT see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list on the left, do the following:īottom left of the window select the wheel icon with the down-pointing triangle. This last action below is NOT described in the iWires notes but was required in my case, it may also be required in yours. In the middle of the window, on the Output tab, where it says "Source:" select your TV from the drop-down list. On the left-hand side of the window you should now see HDMI. Using either Finder or Launchpad go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup. Select your TV from the drop-down list next to HDMI, below where it says "Select a device for sound output". Middle of the window select your TV where it says "Play sound effects through:". Be sure you are on the Sound Effects tab. There are 3 tabs in the window Sound Effects, Output and Input. leave all other settings at their default values. Select the desired resolution for your TV (probably 1080i). You should now only see 2 tabs, Display and Color. Bottom left of the window tick "Mirror Displays". Bottom left of the window tick "Show displays in menu bar" and then bottom right click "Detect Displays". There are 3 tabs in the window Displays, Arrangement and Color. The booklet instructions basically say do the following,

In this instance Apple are failing to live up to their catch-phrase as final setup is NOT intuitive "it just DOESN'T work". USB C to HDMI DVI VGA Adapter, Weton 4 in 1 USB-C hub to 4K HDMI, VGA, DVI Video Adapter, Male to Female Multi-Display Video Converter Monitors Connector for Mac Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Pro, XPS, etc 4. Most people don't read this as it's normally the case that when you plug a cable in to anything it just works (VCR, TiVo, Xbox, video camera etc). If you purchased an iWires cable direct from Apple the instructions are in the printed booklet that comes in the packaging. In a few seconds, you should see the Mac desktop on the HDTV.Re: No sound over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI AdapterĭisplayPort to HDMI Sound is actually set up by using the MIDI setup utility found in :Īpplications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup. Your Mac should recognize the format and resolution of the TV, and automatically select the native resolution of the TV for running the video. Once the HDTV is powered up, turn on the Mac.

It doesn't need to be set to the connection the Mac is on, but it must be powered up first, so that when it boots, your Mac can recognize the TV and the resolution it needs. You may also need a DVI-to-HDMI or DVI-to-VGA adapter, depending on which port on the HDTV you choose for the connection.Ĭonnect the cable between the Mac and the HDTV. At a minimum, you'll need a mini DVI-to-DVI adapter. You'll need at least one adapter, maybe even two.

IMacs and MacBooks have a mini DVI connector for hooking up external monitors or TVs. The adapter may be a cable with a DVI connector on one end and an HDMI connector on the other, or it may be a small adapter that has both types of connectors, but no cable. If you choose HDMI, you'll need a simple adapter, which is available from multiple sources. If you choose VGA, you can use the adapter that came with your Mac. But in all likelihood, you'll need to connect your Mac to your HDTV using either an HDMI or VGA connection both options require an adapter.
